May has just started on the calendar and it can only mean one thing: times of pilgrimages is coming!

And we are not only referring to the Romería del Rocío, one of the most fervent of the peninsula, but to all those pilgrimages that are celebrated in our towns. A moment of joy and reunion, of field and dust, of devotion and song. In short, a very special time of the year.

As we always say in Flamentex, flamenco fashion is changeable. And it moves to the rhythm of prêt-à-porter fashion. A singularity for a regional costume. However, although it adapts to the seasons, it is always necessary to follow certain canons. We review them:

Woman: how to dress for a pilgrimage.

Thanks to the changes that time has brought about in this costume, women now dress more comfortably in the Romerías. It is a dress with less ruffles than the ones we would wear to the fair - which translates into less weight - and patterns that mark the waist but wide from the hip, for more amplitude, mobility and comfort. 

While it is true that we can wear a flamenco dress to a pilgrimage without being out of place, it is more advisable to wear a canastero, a rociera's dress (bata rociera) or a rociera' skirt.The main difference is the comfort that these outfits will bring us. While the flamenco dress is usually tighter and heavier, the costume for pilgrimages is looser and lighter. That said, it will also depend on the time we go on pilgrimage: whether we will go the whole way or just go for a day.

Difference between Traje Canastero, Bata Rociera and Falda Rociera.

If there is something that unites these types of suit or skirt, beyond the Way, is the type of fabric. We will always opt for fresh and light fabrics. Avoid delicate fabrics or fabrics that spoil easily, such as silk.

As for the prints, we leave the design to the imagination of each one, being plain, polka dots and stripes the most common prints.

Rociera Skirt

We start with the rocieras skirts: preferably long and with a lot of flight, they can be combined with different types of tops.

It is ideal to wear it on the Camino de la Romería and are usually combined with basic shirts , which allow us to mark the waist, as well as short tops or or batiste or plumeti shirts in fresh cotton fabric.

Bata Rociera

Of gypsy influence, this dress has less flounce than the flamenco dress, a single row of ruffles on the bottom and the absence of petticoat.

A very comfortable option if we want to do the Camino.

Canastero

Perhaps the best known among the Romero fashion, thanks to its incursion in the main Fairs and catwalks.

As Claudia Alfaro tells us in her blog::

«The canastero dress is a single flounce divided into as many partitions as you wish. These divisions, layered or threaded, are joined together to form a single ruffle. And, yes , it has petticoats!!! (which can also be canasteras or not). On the other hand, the flamenco dresses with cascading flounces are the classic ones, as they say, "the ones of all life". Each ruffle is independent of the previous one and is sewn to the skirt (or body if it is full).»

Men: how to dress for a pilgrimage.

They wear a short suit, ideal with country pants, and a jacket and shirt. They can complete their look with hat, sash, and camper boots.

While it is true that this costume has not evolved as much as the women's, this one is also adapting to fashion. Men can be seen wearing light tones, even pastel , without forgetting the classic shades : blacks, grays, browns and greens. They are usually 100% cotton fabrics, plain or with a discreet stripe print.
