Care instructions for making a flamenco dress

Before even starting to make your dress, Flamentex recommends previously washing the fabrics you intend to use, both for the outfit as well as for the accessories. You can use small fabric samples to avoid wasting fabric.

Likewise, we also recommend the use of neutral soaps and color catcher wipes.

How to wash a Flamenco dress

The best way of taking caring of your flamenco dress is by following the washing instructions you can find on the label provided by Flamentex, or alternatively, by the individual designer. Additionally, we include some other basic recommendations:

  • It is important no to wait too long between the use of the dress and washing the garment. That way, it will be easier to keep it looking like new.
  • If you can't find a label with washing instructions or if you have any doubts, it is best to wash cold and by hand.
  • If you prefer to use the washing machine, make sure to turn the dress inside-out and use a short cold setting for soft fabrics. It is also important to use a neutral liquid detergent, combined with vinegar and sea salt. We additionally recommend adding a color catcher wipe.
  • In the washing machine, you can replace the softener with sugar, as this helps to starch the dress. You can find more information in tintorería Oso Polar
  • Do not use bleach, fabric softeners or aggressive cleaning products.
  • If your dress has an underskirt, wash separately.
  • If your dress has sequins, decorative stones or any other kind of decorations, we recommend washing by hand to avoid any damage.
  • When ironing the gypsy dress (traje de gitana), we recommend doing so inside-out and at a medium or low temperature, depending on the fabric. You should iron every single ruffle separately to avoid friction.
  • For the shawls (mantoncillos), it is important to always wash by hand without wetting the fringes. Spread them out well to dry.
  • It is not recommended to let your outfit soak, as the water can cause colours to dilute.
  • When drying your outfit, do not leave it in the sun or tumble dry. Lay it out horizontally in the shade, without draining the water.

When washing your outfit, it is also the perfect moment to check if it needs any sewing touch-ups.

How to store a flamenco dress

  • It is recommended to store it in an individual storage bag with enough space so it doesn't get crushed or too folded.
  • If your dress is very low cut, we recommend that you use some shoulder pins so it doesn't slip off the hanger.
  • When it comes to storing fringes, it is advisable to unstitch them and store them separately in order to avoid knots and deterioration. In the same way, you can store it together with your shawl: separately, well folded and in boxes.
