The flamenco dress, proposed as Intangible Heritage of Humanity

The association of designers and entrepreneurs of flamenco fashion and craftsmanship QLAMENCO requests the consideration of flamenco fashion and craftsmanship as Intangible Heritage of Humanity..

An initiative led by its president, the fashion editor and artistic fashion director Pedro González..

But... For what reason? According to the same communiqué, there are several reasons:

Reasons why the flamenco dress is proposed as Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Extracted from the same communiqué, we highlight:

  • "The Flamenco Dress and its accessories are shaped not only as the image of Andalusia but also as the image of Spain in front of the world".“.
  • The Flamenco Dress "has become an iconic style of international fashion".“.
  • "The Flamenco Dress extends and preserves the idiosyncratic craft professions of the Andalusian community which are characteristic of its prototypes".
  • "The Andalusian hand embroidery, the application of leather handicrafts, the handmade production of fringes and shawls, the design and manufacture of accessories such as shoes, flowers and jewellery, make up an aesthetic ensemble that is unquestionably recognisable and iconic".

A petition that aims to integrate the Flamenco Dress to the International Day of Flamenco declared Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, which already celebrates its day every 16th of November.

Currently this International Day recognises Flamenco, which includes its own apparel, but has nothing to do with the Flamenco Dress. The dress used in Flamenco dancing can't be compared with the Flamenco or Gypsy outfit, although they have the same aesthetic roots..

The Flamenco fashion sector today

This initiative arose as a result of the crisis generated by the Covid-19.

And with it, initiatives such as the Lunar-Off Movementwere also born: the Andalusian movement for the support and visibility of flamenco fashion.

But... what exactly is this movement fighting for?

  • Specific aid for the sector, which is not linked to promotion but to the sustainability of the companies.
  • To integrate flamenco fashion into Flamenco as World Heritage.
  • For our activity to be recognised as culture, and to fight for a cultural VAT like other artisan trades.
  • Aid and tax reductions while this forced stoppage lasts and the first fairs and pilgrimages return.

If you want more information, we encourage you to join this movement and spread it with the hashtag #yoapoyolamodaflamenca. (I support flamenco fashion).
