Fabrics for flamenco shawls

The flamenco shawl is the most deeply rooted accessory in our gypsy costumes..

There are many ways to place it, such as crossed or peaked. Here are some inspiring ideas, seen on TikTok.

In the past, shawls protected our flamencas from the cold, but over the years, they have become an essential accessory in our flamenco outfits.

Generally, after studying the yearly trends, we notice that shawls are often contrasted with coloured suits, thus giving a striking and distinctive touch to the combination.

The fabric options for flamenco shawls are very diverse. Apart from the classic plain or polka dot fabrics, which aim to complement or give contrast to our costume, there are other options:

Fabrics of Flowers

One of our favourite options are fabrics with floral motifs. Our NATASHA model is ideal for this, a drapey crepe fabric with a variety of floral prints. Here are some options:

How can we make our shawl?

Renewing the small shawl can be a good idea when we don't want to make a new flamenco dress but we want to give a different look to the previous year.

Making your own small shawl is very simple, you will need:

  1. Half meter of fabric, the one you want.
  2. Thread and basting thread
  3. Pins
  4. Scissors
  5. Tailor's Chalks
  6. Meter
  7. Pattern, that we get, doing a triangle with the measures that we want to have our shawl

Step-by-step procedure:

  1. We fold in a half the fabric and the pattern that we done previously.
  2. We put pins on the fabric and cut letting 4 cm around the shawl.
  3. We do a little hem.
  4. We sew with basting thread and finish by hand sewing.

To add fringes we can do it ourselves or buy it in a specialist store.
