Fabrics for the Pilgrimage Wagons

The Pilgrimage of El Rocío or the pilgrimage of the Virgen de la Cabeza, two important dates in the annual pilgrimage calendar, are just around the corner.

And if last week we talked about the keys to choose the fabrics to go to a pilgrimage. Today we want to complete this information with the fabrics that dress our wagons.

While we know that Roman fashion is more casual and relaxed, with simpler and more comfortable outfits, adapted for walking and outdoor activities, we must not forget our eternal companions: the wagons.

The wagons that accompany the pilgrimages are an important part of the tradition and are often decorated in an attractive and festive way.

Flowers, garlands and banners, paintings and motifs, awnings and parasols, symbolic objects such as images of saints, flags with emblems are often used.

Similarly, fabrics are also a widely used resource, incorporated in a variety of ways:

For skirts and curtains

They can be used to create skirts and curtains, by placing the fabric on the sides and back of the wagon, creating a kind of curtain that covers part of the structure. These skirts are usually made of colourful, patterned fabrics.

For seat covers

If the wagon has seats, it is common to cover them with cloth covers to protect them and also to add a decorative touch.

In these cases, the most commonly used article is the one known as "alpujarreñas":
